Family Fun Day
Coach Joe Vesey has organized an exciting day on Monday, August 16th at Kimball's Farm in Westford. The day will include unlimited miniature golf, bumper boats and driving range for everyone, plus lunch and a Kimball's ice cream cone. The standard cost of such an event is normally over $50 per person, but Coach Joe has negotiated a significant discount for all who attend. As a fundraiser, we will also be holding a family pitch and putt tournament with prizes and raffles. Click here for more info

Lowell Spinners Game
We have a block of tickets for the Sunday, August 22nd Lowell Spinners game at 1:35 pm. The Spinners are the Class A minor league affiliate for the Red Sox. Recent alumni include Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury. If you've never been to a Spinners game before, they are a lot of fun for families. Tickets are free for your MLM player plus one parent. Additional tickets can be purchased for other family members for $5 each. In addition, the MLM players will be allowed on the field for 15 minutes about an hour before game time. We are in the process of figuring out what that will entail - possibly meeting players, hitting a ball, running the bases, etc. - but it depends on the number of attendees as we are limited to 15 minutes. Seats are limited and are available on a first come - first serve basis. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please email Lauren to let her know the number of tickets you want.

The Miracle League of Massachusetts is a non-profit organization that provides all children with the opportunity to play baseball in an organized non-competitive league at no cost to their families. Our players have physical or mental challenges that prevent them from playing in a mainstream league. There is something about playing the game of baseball that lights up the eyes of a child, but for children with disabilities and challenges, that opportunity often is missing. The Miracle League of Massachusetts gives these children the opportunity to get outside, create friendships with teammates and community volunteers, and enjoy playing the game of baseball in its purest form.

The Miracle League of Massachusetts was founded in 2008 and our fifth season begins on May 1, 2010. This season, we will have more than 80 players with a wide range of abilities coming to Boxborough from 34 different towns in the Boston area. Parents who were skeptical whether their child would be interested or able to play were excited to see that their child could participate - and have a great time, too. During each Miracle League game, every child is given the opportunity to hit the ball and score, every inning.

Team members are assigned buddies who assist them in hitting the ball, fielding and running the bases. More importantly, these buddies provide the players with encouragement and friendship. The majority of our volunteers are teenagers from the community. It is touching to see these kids who have never met before, cheer for one another, high five each other, or learn how to fist bump. The Miracle League enables both the players and the typical teenagers to overcome boundaries and learn that the other kids are not that different after all.

Yet in all their joy and triumph, there is still one thing missing-the ability to play on a safe field free of obstacles. Currently the Miracle League of Massachusetts plays at an elementary school ballfield in Boxborough. To the able-bodied, the field appears in great shape, but to an individual utilizing a wheelchair or a walker or to a child with vision or balance issues, the smallest rut or bumpy terrain can be difficult and dangerous.

These kids need a safe place to play, a specially equipped Miracle Field. This custom-designed venue incorporates a cushioned synthetic turf. This completely smooth surface accommodates wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices, while helping prevent injuries. In other words, a level field where physically and mentally challenged children can safely hit, run, pitch and catch, just like the best of them.

Please help us make our dream of building a Miracle Field in Massachusetts a reality. Every child deserves the chance to play baseball and share in the joys of the game.
